Exubera poised to become the first inhaled, rather than injected, insulin


A government advisory panel is considering a new approach to insulin. Instead of injecting insulin to control the blood sugar levels of diabetics, this new method will allow users to inhale their medicine.

Exubera is being developed by Pfizer, Sanofi-Aventis, and Nektar Therapeutics. Thus far the FDA is concerned about the effects that Exubera might have on the lungs of patients, especially those that smoke, or those with lung disease.

Last year, the drug industry spent $4.02 billion on ads, up 23 percent from 2003 and 62 percent from 2000, according to consulting firm IMS Health.
